 Automatic TLC Developing System

To appreciate the operation of the TIPPER TLC Automatic Development System an understanding of the various components that comprise the system is most helpful.

1. PLATE HOLDER

The TIPPER features a specially designed TLC plate holder that suspends the TLC plate in the Developing Tank.  The illustration below shows the proper attachment of a 10x10cm TLC plate into the plate holder.

2. PLACING IN THE TANK

The plate holder is placed in the TLC tank and carefully latched into place. Thumbscrews are tightened to completely secure the tank to the platform.

3. END POINT SENSOR ADJUSTMENT

The end point sensor is adjusted to the desired solvent front end-point.

4 TANK PLATFORM TILTS

When the countdown timer reaches 0:00, the tank slowly tilts allowing mobile phase to contact sorbent. When solvent wicks up to the level of the EDS, the tank platform tilts back to its original position thus stopping the development.  Simultaneously, an alarm sounds, signaling the user to remove the TLC plate.

How the TIPPER Works

  1. Power is turned on and the Mobile Phase is poured into the tank.

  2. The TLC plate (with sample applied) is fitted into the plate holder in the development tank lid, the lid is placed on tank and latched into place.

  3. The end of Development Sensor (EDS) is adjusted to the desired solvent front end point.

  4. The equilibration timer is set to desired time (0 to 99 minutes... if no equilibration is required, timer is set to 0) and the Start/Stop button is depressed.

  5. Timer counts down. When 0:00 is reached, tank platform slowly tilts allowing mobile phase to contact sorbent. (If an equilibration time of "0" was set, tilting begins immediately).

  6. When solvent wicks up to the level of the EDS, the tank platform tilts back to its original position thus stopping the development. Simultaneously, an alarm sounds, signaling the user to remove the TLC plate.

Maximize the utility of the TIPPER by attaching additional Expansion Tank Platforms to the Master Unit.  Up to 5 additional Expansion Platforms can be attached and individually controlled by the Master Unit with each tank platform can be programmed with different parameters.  By using additional Tank Platforms you can increase the productivity of your lab while improving the reproducibility of your results.
